U.S. studied babies of A-bomb survivors

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Photo shows a room where materials on survivors of U.S. atomic bombings and their babies are kept at Hiroshima University in Hiroshima on April 20, 2012. The United States has returned the materials after research. Internal documents of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, or AFIP show that organ samples and medical records of more than 1,200 babies of Japanese survivors of atomic bombings, born dead or who died shortly after birth, were sent to the United States for radiation research.

7 billionth baby in Fukushima

FUKUSHIMA, Japan - Tomoko Watanabe, 20, holds her son, who was born on Oct. 31, 2011, as one of the ''7 billionth babies,'' at a hospital in the city of Fukushima. The U.N. Population Fund estimates that the world's population exceeded 7 billion that day. Watanabe said she will raise her son in Fukushima despite relatively high radiation levels due to the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

1,000 more hospital beds needed for newborn intensive care

KAWAGUCHI, Japan - An obstetrician at the Kawaguchi Municipal Medical Center in Saitama Prefecture takes care of a baby at its neonatal intensive care unit. An estimate by a Japanese health ministry research team showed July 25 that Japanese medical facilities need roughly 1,000 more beds for intensive care to treat immature babies or other babies born in critical condition.

2 babies born at reopened clinic in quake-hit Niigata

NIIGATA, Japan - Two women have given birth at a freshly reopened maternity clinic in Ojiya, one of the communities in Niigata Prefecture worst hit by the devastating earthquakes of Oct. 23. Kumiko Suzuki (L), a 30-year-old local government employee in the town of Oguni, gave birth to a boy on Nov. 5 while Izumi Wada, a 29-year-old housewife in the town of Koshiji, gave birth to a girl two days later.
